Let’s kick off this skincare 101 series with something that is not related to a product but an essential part in keeping your skin healthy: Sleep. Many of us might not be aware that a lack of sleep can result in skin problems. So why is it essential to get a good night’s sleep?
When you don’t get enough sleep, a major sign are dark circles and under eye bags which is caused by dilation of your blood vessels. Another task of the skin during the night is to seal in moisture. Too few hours of sleep lead to dehydration of your skin, causing ph levels to drop and resulting in dull skin in the morning. Additionally, cortisol – a stress hormone – gets released due to a lack of sleep and can cause our skin to breakout more. Lastly, a nice side effect of a good night of sleep is that your bodies release a growth hormone which helps to maintain collagen and skin elasticity. If this process cannot take place it might favors fine lines and loosen your skin.
Now that you know what side effects a lack of sleep can cause, make sure to get at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep at night, always make sure to properly clean your face before going to sleep, and choose night time skincare products that provide a lot of moisture and help your skin regenerate over night.
