Digital Aging – „What does it even mean?“ you may ask. Electronic devices such as computers, tablets and smartphones emit blue light (or also called HEV light), which can damage our eyes and disrupt our sleep-wake cycle. Furthermore, it can also affect our skin and cause it to wrinkle and age much faster. Unbelievable, but true. Blue light penetrates deep into the lower skin layers and it can be assumed that it further causes oxidative stress – similar to UV-radiation.
Since I’m a daily computer and smartphone user, I was curious what it’s all about and tried to dig deeper into the topic. Blue light is not negative per se. I read that if it’s not a too high dosage, it can strengthen body and psyche and can have an effect on winter depression. Dermatologists even use blue light to treat acne and neurodermatitis. However, even though it does not cause cancer, it can lead to premature skin aging and persistent pigment disorders.
To a certain grade, however, the skin can protect itself from blue light. So no need to go on a digital detox right away. To support our skin, the beauty industry has of course already developed numerous skin care products to further protect us from the effects of blue light and that’s also how I became aware of this topic. To round this up, I put together some products to protect your skin from blue light damage.
